What People Don’t Understand About Asperger’s Syndrome

Asperger’s syndrome is a neurological disorder that affects how people interact and communicate with others. It falls on the autism spectrum, which means that those who have it experience difficulties in social communication and interaction.

Despite what many people think, Asperger’s syndrome is not simply a “mild” form of autism. The symptoms can be just as severe, if not more so, than those experienced by people with autism. For example, individuals with Asperger’s syndrome may have trouble understanding body language and facial expressions, making eye contact, and understanding and using sarcasm and humor. They may also have problems with motor skills and sensory processing.

Another common misconception about Asperger’s syndrome is that all people who have it are geniuses. This is not true. While some people with Asperger’s syndrome may have above-average intelligence, others may have average or below-average intelligence.

People with Asperger’s syndrome often face a lot of stigma and misunderstanding. This can be extremely frustrating and isolating for them. It’s important to remember that people with Asperger’s syndrome are just like everyone else – they just experience things a little differently. If you know someone who has Asperger’s syndrome, please be understanding and supportive. Thank you!
